Free Dyno Alternative With a Modern Web Dashboard

Dyno has earned its reputation as a moderation bot. Plenty of staff teams learned Discord moderation with it, and it remains a solid option. People who look for a Dyno alternative usually have one of three reasons: they want a dashboard that feels more current, they want moderation and the rest of their bots in one place, or they want to compare what each bot includes for free (check Dyno's current plans on its website, since plans change).

This guide focuses on what Dyno users care about most, moderation, AutoMod and logs, and shows how to set each one up in MagnificBot, where every module is part of the free plan.

Moderation: cases, notes and an escalation ladder

Good moderation is less about the ban hammer and more about consistency. MagnificBot gives you the usual commands (/warn, /timeout, /kick, /ban, /purge) plus temporary bans, and every action becomes a numbered case you can look up with /case. Staff can attach private notes to a member, and /warnings and /clearwarn keep the warning count tidy.

The part that saves the most time is automatic escalation. Instead of each moderator deciding how many warnings deserve a timeout, you define the ladder once. Out of the box it looks like this:

Active warnings Automatic action
3 60-minute timeout
5 Kick

You can edit it and add up to ten steps, each a timeout, kick or ban, with a duration where it applies. A common setup for busy servers is 2 warnings for a short timeout, 4 for a day-long timeout and 6 for a ban.

A few other settings worth knowing:

  • DM on action: the member receives a direct message explaining the sanction (on by default).
  • Default reason: used when a moderator forgets to type one.
  • Message cleanup on ban: delete the banned user's messages from the last 0 to 7 days.
  • Manual actions count too: if a moderator bans or times someone out through Discord's own menu, MagnificBot records it as a case, so the history never has holes.

AutoMod: a starter configuration

AutoMod handles the repetitive work so humans can focus on judgement calls. These are the filters and their defaults:

Filter Default Suggested starting point
Discord invites Blocked Keep blocked; exempt a partners channel if needed
Links Allowed Block in general chat, with an allowlist of trusted domains
Mass mentions 8 per message 5 for small servers
Spam 6 messages in 5 seconds Keep, or tighten to 5 in 5
Caps Off 70% for chat channels (only checks messages of 12+ letters)
Banned words Empty Add slurs and scam phrases; whole-word matching avoids false positives

Each infraction triggers one of three responses: delete the message, delete and warn, or delete and time out for a set number of minutes. You can exempt staff roles and specific channels (a memes channel, for example), and send AutoMod reports to their own channel or to your moderation log.

Discord also has a built-in AutoMod with keyword and spam filters. The two work fine together: many servers use Discord's native rules for keyword blocking and MagnificBot for rate-based spam, caps and the warning-plus-escalation flow.

Logs that answer "who did what?"

When something goes wrong, logs are your memory. MagnificBot splits them into five categories, each with its own channel:

  • Messages: edits and deletions.
  • Members: joins, leaves, nickname and role changes.
  • Moderation: bans, unbans and timeouts, including ones made outside the bot.
  • Server: channels and roles created or deleted.
  • Voice: joins, leaves and moves (off by default, as it can be noisy).

You can ignore specific channels, such as a bot-commands channel, and the events are also kept in the dashboard even if you do not assign a Discord channel. On top of that, the dashboard audit log records who changed which setting, which is useful when several admins share the panel.

Moving from Dyno without a gap

  1. Write down your current AutoMod rules and punishment thresholds.
  2. Invite MagnificBot from magnificbot.com; it does not request Administrator.
  3. Set up log channels first, so you can watch both bots during the switch.
  4. Recreate your escalation ladder and AutoMod filters, then disable the same filters in Dyno.
  5. Brief your moderators: commands are similar, and dashboard access roles (Moderator, Support, Reader and others) let them use the panel without extra Discord permissions.

The free plan includes everything above. Its trade-offs are per-server limits on some items and a promotional message every 8 to 16 hours, which Premium removes (see pricing). If you are also replacing other bots, our guide to replacing multiple Discord bots with one covers the rest.

FAQ

Can I use MagnificBot and Dyno at the same time?

Yes, but do not enable the same AutoMod filter in both, or members get punished twice for one message.

Do AutoMod warnings count toward escalation?

Yes. With the "delete and warn" action, the warning is recorded as a case and can trigger the next step of your ladder.

Are temporary bans lifted automatically?

Yes. A temporary ban ends on its own when the duration expires.

Do moderators need Discord permissions to use the dashboard?

No. Dashboard access roles are separate from Discord permissions.
