Looking for a Carl-bot Alternative? A Free Option

Carl-bot is a favourite among admins who like control. Its reaction roles, logging and flexible settings have powered a lot of servers, and if it works for you, there is no urgent reason to leave. But many admins look for a Carl-bot alternative when they want role menus that feel more modern, a visual editor for embeds, or simply fewer bots to manage. As always, check Carl-bot's current plans on its own site; we only describe what MagnificBot does.
Reaction roles, minus the reactions
Classic reaction roles work by clicking an emoji under a message. They do the job, but they have quirks: dozens of emojis clutter the message, members are not always sure whether it worked, and removing a reaction to drop a role is not obvious.
MagnificBot uses role panels built on Discord's own components instead:
- Buttons: one button per role, up to 25 per panel, each with a label and an optional emoji (standard or custom).
- Select menu: a dropdown that keeps long lists tidy.
- Exclusive mode: members can hold only one role from the panel, perfect for colours or regions.
- Private confirmation: after each click, the member gets a message only they can see listing the roles added and removed.
The panel itself is an embed with your own title and description, published to any channel from the dashboard.
Panel ideas that work well
| Panel | Style | Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Name colours | Buttons with colour emojis | Exclusive |
| Pronouns | Buttons | Multiple |
| Game or region | Select menu | Multiple |
| Notification pings (events, streams, updates) | Buttons | Multiple |
| Skill level or rank | Select menu | Exclusive |
A tip that avoids most support questions: the bot can only hand out roles that sit below its own role in Server Settings > Roles. If a button does nothing, check the hierarchy first.
Auto roles on join
The same module gives up to ten roles automatically to every new member, and a separate set of roles to bots that join. Useful for a "Member" role or a "Bots" role that keeps the member list organised.
Embeds without JSON
If you use a bot or website to craft embeds, the message builder in MagnificBot covers that workflow in the dashboard:
- Embeds with title, description, colour, fields, images and footer, with a live preview.
- Link buttons attached to the message.
- Images and videos uploaded straight from your computer.
- Webhooks you create or import, so each message can carry its own name and avatar.
- Scheduled and recurring posts (daily, weekly or every few hours), for event reminders or a regular rules refresh.
- Templates to reuse layouts.
This is where a web dashboard beats commands: you see the final message before it goes out, and other staff can edit it later without retyping anything.
AutoMod and logging, briefly
You also get AutoMod (spam, invites, links with an allowlist, caps, mass mentions and banned words, with delete, warn or timeout responses) and logs split into messages, members, moderation, server and voice. Each log category can go to its own channel, and noisy channels can be ignored. Moderation actions become cases with notes and optional automatic escalation.
What Carl-bot users might miss
If your server relies on custom commands or text tags, know that MagnificBot has no coded custom commands. Its no-code automations cover many of the same needs: a trigger such as "a message contains !ip" can reply with your server address, add a role or send a DM, with conditions like channel, role or account age. For complex scripting, keep a dedicated bot for that one job.
MagnificBot also has no music, economy or minigames. On the free plan you get every module, with starter limits on how many role panels, automations and other items a server can have, 25 MB of uploads and a promotional message from the bot every 8 to 16 hours. Premium raises those limits and removes the promo messages; see pricing.
Switching in an afternoon
- Invite MagnificBot from magnificbot.com and drag its role above every role it should assign.
- Rebuild your most-used role panel first and post it next to the old one for a day.
- Recreate your key embeds in the message builder and schedule anything recurring.
- Turn on AutoMod and logs, then disable the matching features in Carl-bot.
- Remove the old reaction-role message once members have switched.

FAQ
Can I keep my existing emoji reaction roles?
They belong to the bot that created them. Post a new button or menu panel and retire the old message once members have moved.
How many roles can one panel hold?
Up to 25 options per panel, as buttons or as a select menu.
Can members pick only one role from a group?
Yes. Turn on exclusive mode and choosing a new role removes the previous one from that panel.
Do I need to know JSON to make embeds?
No. The message builder is visual, with a live preview.
